The Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship Program in Canada allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents and grandparents to become permanent residents. Eligibility criteria for the sponsors
- 18 years or above;
- Working and living in Canada;
- A Canadian permanent residence or a Canadian citizen;
- Able to meet the MNI (Minimum Necessary Income) criteria;
- You sign an agreement with the IRCC. It includes your duties, commitments, and other details;
- No debts on the Canadian or foreign soil;
- No criminal records while in Canada.
Your obligations as a PGP sponsor: except Quebec
Individuals seeking to sponsor their parents/grandparents must enter into an agreement with the IRCC. For sponsors residing outside Quebec, this vital agreement obligates them to financially support their sponsored family members for 20 years following their acquisition of permanent residency in Canada (sponsors residing in Quebec are bound by a 10-year undertaking).
Sponsors are also liable to reimburse any provincial social assistance received by their sponsored family members during this period. Additionally, sponsors must ensure the provision of essential needs. The sponsor must be a resident of Canada. They are required to remain in Canada until a decision is made on the application.
Must demonstrate sufficient income
Upon receiving an ITA for PGP, sponsors must provide evidence of meeting the income requirement for the preceding three tax years. If a spouse or CLP co-signs the application, their income can contribute to meeting the minimum income threshold. The specific income needed varies based on family size, the number of individuals being sponsored, and whether the sponsor resides in Quebec.

Fees
Interest-To-Sponsor doesn’t have any fees. However, there is a processing fee (CAD 1080) to submit a complete PGP application. An application processing time ranges between 20 to 25 months.
Documents you need as a sponsor
An interest-to-sponsor form doesn’t require any documents but information. Once you are shortlisted to submit an ITA, you need to submit the following –
- Your residential status in Canada
- Physical presence in Canada
- MNI and 3 tax year’s documents
- Medical and police clearance certificate of your parents & grandparents
- Digital photo.
For your parents and grandparents
- Sponsors must have a blood or adoption relationship with their parents or grandparents;
- They must also pass criminal admissibility checks and provide on-arrival biometrics;
- There is no requirement for sponsored individuals to secure a job offer or work in Canada;
- Moreover, there is no mandate for them to demonstrate proficiency in English or French;
- A medical examination is mandatory to confirm their medical admissibility status;
- Sponsored individuals can travel freely inside Canada with a super visa.
